It is an approximate network location, not a street address

IP location is not a GPS coordinate or a registered home address. It estimates a country, region, and city from information about the organization operating an IP range and from network observations.

An IP address is assigned to an internet connection, not permanently attached to a person or home. The same address may later be assigned to another subscriber, and several people may share one address at the same time. An IP estimate should never be treated as proof of a person's physical location.

What to expect from each field

FieldReasonable interpretationLimitation
CountryApproximate country where the connection is registeredA VPN or international network can show another country
Region or cityArea associated with the provider networkMay be a nearby city or head-office location
CoordinatesCity center or network reference pointNot the device or building position
Time zoneTime zone for the estimated areaMay differ while traveling or using a VPN
ISP or ASNNetwork operating or connecting the IP rangeA reseller can display an unfamiliar organization

Common reasons the location is different

Your provider's internet exit is in another city

Your traffic may pass through a nearby access point and leave for the internet through central equipment in another city. The location may describe that exit or the registered address range rather than your device.

You use mobile data or public Wi-Fi

A mobile network can share addresses across a large region or reassign them frequently. Hotel, café, and airport Wi-Fi can also appear at the location of the operator's central network.

You connect through a workplace, VPN, or privacy relay

When traffic passes through an intermediate server, websites see that server's IP. A VPN in another city or country can therefore change the displayed location. This may show that routing changed, but it does not by itself prove the quality or security of the connection.

Location records have not caught up

IP ranges can be transferred between network operators or moved to another area. An old organization or city may remain visible until location records are updated.

Appropriate uses for IP location

  • Suggesting a default country or language
  • Adding context to an alert for a login from a very different country
  • Showing regional content first while keeping a manual selector available
  • Providing approximate network details during a connectivity support request

IP location is not suitable for delivery addresses, emergency response, finding a person, or legal conclusions. Those uses require an address supplied by the user, device location shared with clear permission, or an appropriate lawful process.

What to check when a result looks wrong

  1. Open Check my IP and note the current address and network name.
  2. Check whether a VPN, workplace gateway, or privacy relay is active.
  3. Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data to see whether both the IP and city change.
  4. If the network name is also unfamiliar or you received a login alert, review your account password and recent sessions.

A different city alone is not a reason to reset the router or remove applications. First compare the connection paths and decide whether this is an expected network difference.

Frequently asked questions

Can an IP address reveal my exact home address?

An ordinary IP lookup cannot reveal an exact home address or identify a person. It generally provides a country, region, or city estimate and may show the location of provider equipment.

Does a different city mean my IP was hacked?

No. A provider registration area, an internet gateway, a workplace network, or a VPN server commonly causes a different city to appear.

Which is more accurate: GPS or IP location?

GPS and device location based on Wi-Fi are generally more accurate when the user grants permission. IP location is mainly useful for a rough estimate without requesting precise location access.

IP location is an approximate estimate based on network registration and observation data. Do not use it as a street address or precise device location.
